Master's Research Project

The Project

ALLRecovery is an interactive mobile application designed to teach patients and their families about acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and the common treatments. The app includes 3 animations that serve an introduction to the arcade game, RECOVER. RECOVER is a top-down shooter game where the player uses chemotherapy to destroy leukemia cells.

The Purpose:

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer in children. Currently, an easily accessible learning aid for a younger audience is not available. Also, the 5-year survival rate for childhood ALL is more than 90% and still increasing, therefore the information given to patients and their family members should be more hopeful. Presenting the concept of ALL as a cartoon and a game is a friendly way to explain the illness and can help cope with fear and anxiety. Using the mobile application platform allows easier access to the material.

The Objectives:

The primary objective of ALLRecovery is to provide an engaging and interactive method for acute lymphoblastic leukemia education. After viewing the animations and playing the game, the audience will be able to explain the concept of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and the chemotherapy processes involved with the treatment of ALL. The secondary objective of ALLRecovery is to implement realistic representation of biological and cellular structures.
